Suspects detained in morning shooting

One man was arrested and three others have been detained in connection with an early morning shooting that injured two people in North Beach, according to police.

Officers responded to reports of shots fired around 1:30 a.m. Saturday at the intersection of Grant and Columbus avenues. Two men in their 20s were taken to local hospitals with gunshot wounds to their lower extremities. Their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, San Francisco Police Officer Albie Esparza said.

Plainclothes police officers responding to the shooting tried to stop at least one fleeing suspect, who reportedly turned and aimed a gun at the officers, Esparza said. The man did not fire his weapon, but at least one officer fired a shot in response. No one was struck by that shot.

That person, though, was taken into custody and a firearm was recovered by police. He was arrested for weapons-related offenses, and investigators are trying to determine if he was responsible for the shooting.
