A San Bruno police officer shot and killed a suspect driving a stolen car following a short pursuit early this morning.

About 2:10 a.m., the officer reportedly spotted a stolen Acura with two occupants and attempted to pull it over. The vehicle had been stolen from San Francisco about a week ago, police Lt. Tim Mahon said.

A short pursuit ended on a dead-end street in the 500 block of Poplar Avenue, near El Camino Real. There, the driver of the stolen vehicle reportedly drove at the officer. Fearing for his life, Mahon said, the officer opened fire.

The driver, who hasn’t been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene. The other suspect, who was in the front-passenger seat, was not injured and was arrested on an unrelated outstanding warrant.

The San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office is conducting a criminal investigation into the shooting, per usual procedure, Mahon said. The San Bruno Police Department is also conducting an internal investigation.

The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave pending the investigation.
