The “Fashion Police” host, long known for snarky quips, complained about staying in her daughter Melissa’s guest room during an appearance on the “Today” show on Tuesday.
“Those women in the basement in Cleveland had more space,” she joked while promoting her new reality series, “Joan & Melissa.” She added to TMZ on Wednesday, “They got to live rent free for more than a decade.”
The comments warranted an outraged response from attorneys for Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus, two of the three women who escaped from the home in 2013.
The lawyers’ statement to a Cleveland paper said Rivers had hit a “new low” and demanded an apology.
But Rivers said no. “I’m a comedienne,” she said to the Plain Dealer on Wednesday. “I know what those girls went through. It was a little, stupid joke. There is nothing to apologize for. … Calm f---ing down. They’re free, so let’s move on.”
