Apparently the amount of disgust generated last week by Paula Deen’s revelation that she uses the N-word is inversely proportional to the amount of love and support she is now getting from her dedicated fan base.
After the Food Network announced that it would dump her, its Facebook page was inundated with hate mail. And, according to The New York Times, Deen’s Savannah, Ga., restaurant was packed to the butter churner over the weekend.
Nicole T. Green, a black woman, told the Times that she made a special trip to Deen’s restaurant in the wake of the scandal. “She didn’t mean it as racist,” Green said of Deen’s comments. “She is just from another time.”
Many are wondering why Deen didn’t take this approach in her three awkward taped apologies, which just seemed to make the situation worse. She should have started with, “I was born in the Deep South in 1947 and even have a brother named Bubba, y’all.”
