Mayor Gavin Newsom’s 20 cent charge on every purchased pack of cigarettes in San Francisco could decease in January. The fee is a litter abatement fee, and the money can only be used to pay for the cost of cleaning up the butts.
On Tuesday, the Board of Supervisors approved in a 10-0 vote legislation that changes when the fee must come under review for possible adjustment.
Instead of reviewing the fee amount July 2011, the City Controller will now review and recommend adjustments by Dec. 1. The changes would go into effect Jan. 1.
Some say the fee would decrease based on a preliminary review of the data. Legally, The City can only charge a fee that covers the costs of The City’s cleanup of the butts and no more.
An maybe that’s because there are less places to buy smokes?
