Supervisor Scott Wiener is planning to introduce a resolution that will urge the expansion of a bike-sharing network in San Francisco.
The City’s oft-delayed bike-sharing plan, managed by the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, is supposed to feature up to 500 interchangeable bikes at 50 different stations where users can pick up and drop off the two-wheelers across downtown San Francisco.
However, Wiener said that The City, with its dense layout, is capable of handling a bike-sharing network numbering in the thousands.
“While I’m pleased to see this initial phase coming to downtown San Francisco, we’re capable of a much more robust network,” Wiener said. “We cannot rest on our laurels right now.”
He wants The City to pursue private sponsorship opportunities to fund the expansion of the bike-sharing network.
Efforts to expand the network should begin immediately, with city officials leading the charge, Wiener said.
Originally scheduled to be in place by Bike to Work Day in 2012, the bike-sharing network has been repeatedly delayed due to contract negotiations between the air district and Alta Bicycle Share, the vendor set to run the network. The implementation date for the project is now set for this fall, according to air district spokesman Aaron Richardson.
