Students set to walk ‘miles to China’

Healthy living and active lifestyles are increasingly becoming the focus in San Francisco Unified School District.

Last week, thousands of students participated in the annual “Walk to School Day.” Tuesday, hundreds more students in the Chinatown neighborhood will take to the streets and figuratively walk “miles to China.”

Students from Gordon J. Lau, Jean Parker and John Yehall Chin elementary schools will walk nearly one mile around Chinatown picking up several more students along the way.

According to school district officials, the weekly walks will promote staying healthy and being active but also build up endurance for their participation in the YMCA’s Lunar New Year Run in February.

Tuesday’s walk will begin at 10:30 a.m. at Gordon J. Lau Elementary School at 950 Clay St. Students will wind nearly one mile through the area with a police escort and end at 350 Broadway, which is John Yehall Chin Elementary School.
