The new operators of the Stow Lake Boathouse in Golden Gate Park offered to double their base rent to $315,000 a year if they ran under the same conditions proposed by the current family that has operated the lake for 67 years.
The comment came after 7-hour meeting at the Recreation and Park Commission, but park staff said their priorities lie in actually renovating the boathouse with a café and attracting more concessions.
After Commissioner David Lee questioned “Are we getting the best deal possible?” staff assured they in fact were, given the highly debated renovations the New Mexico-based family business is proposing.
The commission, except for Lee, voted to approve the Ortega Family Enterprises lease for 15 years with a minimum base rent of $140,000 per year plus concession revenue that was also less than the current operator’s.
Next stop, the Board of Supervisors while The City’s preservationists decide whether the boathouse is historic and should be preserved.
