Staten Island GOP passes over actual candidates to endorse Fossella 

Former Republican Rep. Vito Fossella, who left Congress in disgrace when his mistress and love child were revealed, is not running to get back his Staten Island congressional seat — not yet, anyway. But don’t tell that to local party leaders, who just endorsed his non-candidacy against Rep. Mike McMahon, D-N.Y.

In backing Fossella, party leaders passed over the two candidates who actually interviewed for the endorsement:

“It is my firm belief that he [Fossella] is the strongest candidate we can field,” [party chairman John] Friscia said after the executive committee interviewed candidates for Congress and other races at the Road House in Sunnyside.

Said Friscia, “I have an obligation to pick the strongest candidate with the best chance of success.
