A statement released by the stadium project’s general contractor, Turner-Devcon, said the accident happened about 6:30 a.m. as Lake was unloading materials from his delivery truck.
Peter Melton, a spokesman for the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health, said a bundle of rebar fell on Lake, who was an employee of subcontractor Gerdau Ameristeel.
Lake was severely injured and was taken to a hospital, according to the Turner-Devcon statement. It was the second construction-related death at the stadium site.
“We are deeply saddened to confirm that the driver has passed away as a result of his injuries,” the statement read. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family during this very difficult time.” Construction work at the stadium site was halted Monday, but was set to resume today, according to Turner-Devcon.
Cal-OSHA has said the site is safe, according to Turner-Devcon. The circumstances of the accident remain under investigation by the Santa Clara Police and Fire departments and Cal-OSHA, and an autopsy is scheduled for today.
