St. Ignatius’ Wong takes S.F. Golf Championships title

For St. Ignatius senior Alexandra Wong, it was just another day at TPC Harding Park. Except this day came with a title at the 95th San Francisco Golf Championships on Sunday.

“I’m really comfortable out here because, you know, I live down the street,” Wong said. “It’s kind of a big win for me because this is my home. People here are my family.”

She defeated Jayshree Sarathy in match play 7 and 6, but had to play catch up on Sunday.

“I was 2 down early, but I surged on 16, 17 and 18. I had three straight birdies,” Wong said.

Wong trailed by those two strokes after seven holes, but roared by and took the lead after the 12th and never trailed again.

She plays at Harding Park regularly after school and said she was well prepared for this tournament, but the support from club staff members and family didn’t hurt either.

“It’s really nice,” Wong said. “You have people puling for you. There are marshals driving around asking how you are. It’s pretty nice feeling loved by the people and being rooted for by the people here.”

She and her sister, Andrea, both entered the competition, but only Alexandra made it out of the qualifying round after shooting a 76 on March 3.

Alexandra finished tied for 18th in the Central Coast Section golf championships in the fall. Andrea finished fifth.
The men’s championship was also won by a high schooler, but this one coming from the East Bay.

San Jose State-bound Cody Blick, who barely made the cut and was ranked 31st heading into the first round of match play, beat Menlo Park’s Weston Payne 2 up to claim the men’s title.

“The first eight holes [I] was dropping putts from all over the place,” Blick said. “I was 4 up actually through nine.”

The San Ramon Valley High senior was up by one stroke after 18 holes and thought he was in good position heading into the final set of 18.

“I was thinking shoot even and that should do the job,” Blick said. “It wouldn’t have, but I thought it would have.”
Blick was able to hold off after some strong putting on the back half of the round and shot a 68.
