Sports briefs: Will Beane wheel and deal?

With the annual winter meetings next week, A’s general manager Billy Beane is sure to get inquiries for some of his young talent. The question is whether Beane will deal players such as Dan Haren, Rich Harden or Huston Street for more young talent. "Teams want them," Beane said of rumors. "But it’s coming not from us but from the teams out there with interest. We have players people call about."

Niners’ Smith hopes he can avoid surgery

Injured 49ers quarterback Alex Smith, who’s been resting his shoulder the past two weeks, will speak with Dr. James Andrews and his team and see if surgery will be necessary — something he’d rather avoid. "In talking to them, it’s something that if you can at all, you want to avoid surgery, especially on your throwing shoulder," Smith said. "After a surgery, some quarterbacks can still feel it in their motion, and some continue to play 10 or 12 more years with it." The Niners also received news that cornerbacks Marcus Hudson (sprained knee) and Shawntae Spencer (strained quadriceps) will miss Sunday’s game at Carolina.
