  • A third consecutive Spare the Air alert has been issued for the Bay Area.
The Bay Area Air Quality Management District has issued a third consecutive Spare the Air alert for Wednesday, May 14.

Because of the high temperatures and low wind forecast for tomorrow, air quality is expected to be unhealthy, according to the Management District.

In such weather conditions, smog builds up and can "cause throat irritation, congestion, chest pain, trigger asthma, inflame the lining of the lungs and worsen bronchitis and emphysema," according to the alert.

Bay Area residents are encouraged to carpool or take public transit tomorrow, and are cautioned to avoid outdoor exercise except during the early morning hours, when smog levels are lower.

The Management District has a website, stacommutetips.org, to help commuters find alternate ways to get to work.
