Small fire closes block, clears out residents, at Sixth and Mission

The intersection of Mission and Sixth streets was shut down Saturday morning due to a small kitchen fire on the fifth floor of the Bayanihan House building.

Residents were standing around the street corners and waiting to get back into their homes at about 11:30 a.m. Fire dispatchers said no information was available about the small blaze at the low-income apartment building.

Firefighters at the scene said no major injuries appear to have resulted from the incident.

A fire destroyed the building at that site in 1997 and left 200 people homeless.
