Mari Ann Fitzmaurice, senior vice president of American Express Open is among the organizers behind Small Business Saturday, scheduled in North Beach.

What is Small Business Saturday?

It’s a day to highlight small businesses and what’s unique about them. We know small businesses are the lifeblood of the economy, they’re what make our communities vibrant and unique. So this is a day for consumers to celebrate them and drive traffic to them.

Is this in response to Black Friday and Cyber Monday?

It’s not necessarily a response, but in addition to those days. Large retailers have Black Friday and online businesses have Cyber Monday; we thought it would be great to create a day dedicated to small businesses.

Why? What is the benefit in creating a day for small business?

We know that 93 percent of consumers support small business; they want small business in their community. By having a day dedicated to them, small business becomes part of the consciousness and a part of the holiday shopping culture.

Is this to increase foot traffic?

Yes, we are providing the tools for small businesses to get started, but hopefully make it their own.
