Shelter-in-place order issued within mile of Hayward hazmat incident

Residents and businesses have been ordered to shelter in place within a one-mile radius of a hazardous materials incident in Hayward this afternoon, Alameda County fire officials said.

The incident was reported at 2:08 p.m. at 3130 Depot Road, according to county fire officials.

A spokesman for the Hayward Fire Department, the lead agency handling the case, was not immediately available to provide more information.

3130 Depot Road is the location of the company Contractors Chemical Inc. A phone number listed online for the company is no longer in service.

Juan Torres, an employee at nearby Filter Recycling Services at 3200 Depot Road, said their company was told to shut all windows and turn off their air conditioning.

Torres said he saw "a lot of personnel out there but I don't have a clue what's going on."
