“Sharks defenseman Dan Boyle was kept overnight at a hospital in St. Louis,” the team said in a statement Wednesday morning. “He will be returning to San Jose later today to continue his medical care and undergo further evaluation.”
Boyle told the San Jose Mercury News in a text message that he was recovering.
“I’m OK. That was scary,” he said. “Hopefully, the symptoms will be very minor if any going forward.”
Boyle was hit from behind by St. Louis’ Maxim Lapierre with a forearm check and was sent face-first into the left corner boards. Lapierre is suspended until the league conducts a review of the hit.
It’s uncertain how long Boyle, the team’s top defenseman, will be sidelined.
Meanwhile, Sharks forward Brent Burns will not face a disciplinary hearing from the NHL for Tuesday’s hit on Brenden Morrow of the St. Louis Blues.
