San Francisco’s Shannon Rowbury easily moved into the semifinals of the 1,500-meter race on Monday at the London Olympics after she turned in a solid time of 4 minutes, 06.03 seconds.

Rowbury, who was the highest-qualifying American, finished seventh in her heat, but her time would have been fast enough to win either of the other two qualifying heats. Ethiopia’s Abeba Aregawi was the top qualifier at 4:04.55.

“We ended up going out really quick,” said Rowbury, who graduated from Sacred Heart Cathedral in 2002. “I tried my best to tuck in and conserve energy. ... I’ll hopefully learn from that and change it in the semifinal, God willing. I’ve really been working on closing.”

The semifinals are slated for Wednesday, while the final will be contested on Friday.
