Mission district resident Kate Dewald and two friends will travel to India in September to begin a 2,000-mile trek in a rickshaw for charity. They are collecting donations on their website, www.LostTuk.com.
What is the project? It’s called the rickshaw run ... in what’s called an automatic rickshaw, which is a three-wheeled vehicle that ... has bike handles.
Is it a race? It’s kind of a race, but there’s no winner and each team is required to raise a minimum amount for charity.
How much will you raise? The minimum amount is $2,000 ... and we’re actually the first team to meet our fundraising goal. On top of the fundraising we’ve already done, we have a fundraising goal of $5,000 that we want to donate to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
Why did you and your teammates decide to do this? [Teammate Brianna Limebrook] read about this rickshaw run and she sent me an e-mail asking if we’d be interested.
How long will it take? It’s estimated to take 15 days.
Is it dangerous? We’re leveraging a lot of resources to make sure we’re safe, but [the danger element is] part of what makes it fun.
