S.F. Public Library announces extended hours at three branches

While cities across the country are cutting services, the San Francisco Public Library plans to extend hours at three branches, spokeswoman Michelle Jeffers said.

Beginning Sunday and Monday, the Visitacion Valley, Mission Bay and Portola branches will be open seven days a week.

Previously, Visitacion Valley had been closed Sundays and Mission Bay and Portola were closed Mondays.

Visitacion Valley will now be open Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m. and Mission Bay and Portola will be open Mondays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

“Extending access to our libraries is vital to ensuring that youth maintain their reading and learning skills over the summer,” Mayor Ed Lee said.

City Librarian Luis Herrera said the changes will be positive for youngsters.

“This expansion … will ensure that youth who participate in the library’s annual summer reading program will have more opportunities and days to take part in free science and entertainment programs,” he said.
