3-minute interview: Heather Holt Villyard
The city resident and executive director of ArtSpan will be producing the 35th annual SF Open Studios, a monthlong free event beginning this weekend.
What is SF Open Studios? It is an opportunity for artists to open their doors to the public and share their work outside of a gallery setting. It’s a special thing to be able to go into a studio that isn’t a public venue.
What is the purpose of the event? A lot of people have this idea of the solitary artist, so it’s really meaningful for them to have the ability to present themselves. Without that critical dialogue, there’s not much point to making their work.
What is ArtSpan’s role? We formed 19 years ago mainly because SF Open Studios was run by volunteers.
What are the details of ArtLaunch occurring Saturday? ArtLaunch is a kickoff party for SF Open Studios. It is the first opportunity the public will have to view work by participating artists. We have 85 pieces that are $250 and under, so it is a meaningful event in terms of bringing art into the homes of people who don’t view themselves as collectors.
