Of that total, about $284,000 will go to the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital, and $80,000 to Seattle Children’s Hospital, said Aaron Managhan, 32, a co-organizer of Seattle’s fundraiser.
The money includes matching fund pledges from both the 49ers and Seahawks franchises.
The competition started when 49ers fan Aasheesh Shravah, 38, put extra money raised for a Niners billboard in the Seattle area toward a fund for Seattle’s hospital. Seahawks fans countered by starting a fundraiser to benefit San Francisco’s hospital.
Excluding matching donations, Seattle fans had raised $77,187 as of Sunday evening, when the Seahawks captured the Vince Lombardi Trophy and the campaign was set to wrap up.
“When we started this up, we knew it had a potential to do a little bit of good but hadn’t envisioned the outpouring of support we’d get from both sides,” Managhan said.
Meanwhile, the 49ers fans’ fundraiser has raised $35,092. Seahawks fans beating Niners fans in fundraising is the reason Managhan calculates San Francisco’s hospital will receive more from the total.
“I’ve been in touch with the other team through email and we joked around about it. They said, ‘We’re kicking your butt in donations’ in a funny way, and I said, ‘Yeah, you really are,’” Shravah said. His fundraiser continues through next Sunday, when the billboard expires in the Seattle area where the competition started.
