District 8 Supervisor Scott Wiener’s plan to help tenants dislocated during an earthquake more easily find temporary housing is expected to be approved unanimously Tuesday in a second and final vote by the Board of Supervisors.
Wiener introduced the proposal when he learned of the complications facing tenants and landlords trying to help house them while their units are under repair as a result of the recent Castro fires.
Wiener said the legislation will “ensure that tenants who are displaced by a natural or human made disaster are able to obtain affordable and available temporary housing while their units are being repaired.”
The bill allows landlords to offer displaced tenants rents at similar amounts they were paying while their units are under repair without being penalized under The City’s rent control laws, and defines temporary housing as one year, or possibly two.
So if a landlord offers a lower rent, the landlord won’t get stuck in having to offer that rent level if the tenant doesn’t move out.
The legislation has gained broad support.
