An interesting story on Slate laments that America has not had a bona fide hit Christmas song in nearly 20 years.

Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” came out 19 years ago and went to No. 1. Since then, everyone from Justin Bieber to The Killers to the “Duck Dynasty” crew have released holiday music to minimal chart success.

“What gives?” Slate says. “Why are there no new Christmas standards?”

The answer seems to be a mixture of love for nostalgia and the ubiquity of digital singles clogging the genre. Who can keep up?

At Christmastime, folks want to hear songs they already know. We like having grandma get run over by a reindeer year after year. God bless us, every one.
