Despite initially seeming like something of an odd couple, Courteney Cox and David Arquette evolved into one of Hollywood’s few stable marriages. And they were hanging out just last week on the set of her show “Cougar Town.” So what made the couple decide to try a separation after 11 years? Did the show tempt Courteney to seek a younger man? Was Jennifer Aniston constantly extolling the joys of the single life?
Though their statement claimed the estrangement had been in effect “for some time,” a source on set last week told People magazine that “there was no indication anything was going on. This news … it’s very sad.”
But David called in to the Howard Stern radio show Tuesday to explain that he and his wife had stopped being intimate in June, shortly after they started shooting the fourth installment of “Scream” — the movie, incidentally, where they originally got together.
The actor said the former “Friends” star initiated the separation, saying she was “tired of being your mother.”
“She’s the greatest woman I’ve ever met,” David gushed. “Now, yes, she’s got her issues. She tries to take on everybody’s problem. She tries to be the mother to everyone — that’s why she doesn’t want to be the mother to me anymore.”
The “Never Been Kissed” star admitted to having had “one conquest” since they split. (TMZ identified his so-called rebound chick as brunette beauty Jasmine Waltz, 28. Fun fact: She was the woman who slugged Lindsay Lohan at a nightclub this summer!) Yet he remains hopeful of working things out with his wife.
We hope they indeed reconcile … but telling Howard Stern about your “conquest” probably isn’t the best route toward that end, David.
First it was Laura Dern and Ben Harper on Friday. Then, as we were reeling from Monday’s news of the Cox-Arquette separation, Tuesday brought word of another celebrity marriage’s bombshell bustup. An Us magazine source close to Christina Aguilera says she and husband of five years Jordan Bratman “have been separated for a few months.”
The “Ain’t No Other Man” singer and her producer hubby “were very much in love,” the insider told the tabloid. “But over the last six months, it became clear they were more like friends than husband and wife.”
“Right now they’re just trying to figure things out,” a source told People. As with Courteney and David, “there are no divorce proceedings at this point.”
But, says the Us source, “they are now living apart, and they will see how that goes.” Son Max, 2, “is their main concern.”
Guess celebrity splits come in threes. Bummer!
Dina Lohan may have passed up a chance to get daughter Lindsay on the straight and narrow — back in 2003, four years before the troubled actress got her first DUI and wound up in a spiral of rehab and probation.
According to TMZ, a private investigator assigned to protect the then-17-year-old LiLo from a stalker became concerned that she might be drinking and driving, after tailing her to various nightclubs. The PI got in touch with law enforcement, which then left her mother Dina multiple voice mails (she wasn’t picking up her phone). They allegedly never got a call back.
A source close to Dina defended her, asking, “If law enforcement was so worried about Lindsay’s safety, why didn’t they send someone to Dina’s home to inform her?”
Maybe they didn’t have unlimited manpower to devote to a potentially wayward starlet?
