Designer clothes, lavish cribs, hot groupies — celebrities have a lot to be grateful for. But do they really appreciate the unique gifts that make their lives better than those of non-A-listers? Here are some of blessings we think celebs should be thanking their stars for this Thanksgiving.
OK, we understand that sudden fame can be a little overwhelming. (Well, we’ll take their word for it.) But couldn’t the “New Moon” stars act just a little bit appreciative of the hordes of admirers who are putting their future kids through college? After all, the brooding duo must realize they’re lucky to play Edward and Bella, who have a built-in fan base regardless of the actors who inhabit them. Oh, wait, maybe that’s why they’re bitter.
When their marriage first unraveled, many people were sympathetic to Jon Gosselin, thanks to his overbearing wife and her rather frightening hairstyle. But then he took up with Hailey Glassman, Kate Major and maybe the nanny, while all of them accused him and each other of lying. Meanwhile, public opinion swung in Kate’s favor as she took care of the estranged couple’s eight kids — looking like the long-suffering jilted wife while Jon looked more and more like a jerk. (Kate should be thankful for Ed Hardy shirts, ATVs and Michael Lohan.)
Who says former child stars have to be relegated to rehab and VH-1 series (sometimes at the same time)? After skewering his own image in the “Harold and Kumar” movies, Neil has reinvented himself as an out-and-proud gay man who plays a shameless skirt-chaser, and a charming award-show host beloved by all audiences. Just don’t call him “Doogie.”
The magic of reality-TV ‘celebrity.’
Remember when stars actually had to do something to become famous? Kim and her sisters Kourtney and Khloe got lucky thanks to being born rich and pretty, and being associated with someone else rich and pretty (Paris Hilton, rumored to be understandably jealous that her former friend has eclipsed her in tabloid ubiquity). Now they rake in big bucks by having their every move televised, including Khloe’s whirlwind wedding — bankrolled and filmed by E!
Criticism of their talents, their figures, their rumored cosmetic enhancements — some warranted, some just vicious — abounds in the media. But these sisters are each other’s biggest fans and always quick to defend each other. It’s nice to see that even in cutthroat Hollywood, blood is thicker than ... er, bloggers.
Now that they’re back together, they’re getting a little bit of media coverage again. While they were apart? (Sound of crickets.)
There’s only room for one Stefani in pop, and that’s Gwen Stefani. So it’s actually a good thing that nobody remembers the musical offerings of one Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta — the artist now known as Lady Gaga. It’s hard enough to pull off looking like a pantsless platinum-blond space alien, so better that nobody has a mental picture of La Gaga back when she resembled a human being. (But do a Google image search, just for giggles.)
True, it’s pretty sad that we’re still referring to her as “the star of ‘Mean Girls,’” which came out five years ago. But we’re still pulling for her to find the comeback role that will deliver on her long-dormant potential as an actress.
She was already a rising country-crossover star before the infamous incident at MTV’s VMAs. But the public outrage about the rapper interrupting her acceptance speech made her America’s sweetheart overnight. (The incident paid off PR-wise for Beyoncé, too.) Ironically, having those few moments in the spotlight stolen led to Taylor getting many, many more.
