Scheepers, Wickmayer move through first round of Bank of the West Classic

The two seeded players in action on the first day of the Bank of the West Classic on Monday took different routes to the second round, but both ultimately advanced.

South African Chanelle Scheepers, the sixth seed, cruised past Grace Min 6-4, 6-4 in the first round, while fifth-seeded Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium had to grind out a 7-5, 2-6, 7-5 victory against Taiwan’s Kai-Chen Chang.
Later in the day, xxx defeated xx in another see-saw battle.

Action continues today, where a pair of Stanford players will have a crack against the pros. Senior Mallory Burdette and junior Nicole Gibbs earned wild-card entries into the event. Gibbs meets qualifier Noppawan Lertcheewakarn of Thailand in the first match of the day at 11 a.m., while Burdette takes on Anne Keothavong in the night session at 7 p.m.

Serena Williams, fresh off her Wimbledon win this past weekend, will take the court for her first match on Wednesday afternoon. She’ll meet the winner of the Gibbs-Lertcheewakarn match.
