Saudi woman arrested after operating a vehicle

WHO: Manal al-Sharif

WHAT: The Saudi Arabian woman was reportedly arrested Saturday while driving, a day after she posted footage on YouTube showing herself driving in the city of Al-Khobar.

WHY IT HAPPENED: Al-Sharif was deliberately defying a law that prohibits women from driving in the ultraconservative country, or even from traveling without authorization from a male guardian. Her protest and subsequent arrest came only a few days after another Saudi woman, Najla Al-Hariri, drove around the western city of Jeddah for several days.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN NEXT: It’s unclear if al-Sharif was charged with a specific crime. A nationwide protest on the driving ban, which activists say is based on conservative traditions rather than on clear law or religious mandates, is planned for June 17.
