Santa Clara County probes death of inmate

A 38-year-old San Jose man collapsed Thursday as he was walking to his cell at Elmwood Correctional Facility in Milpitas and died a short time later at an area hospital, officials said.

According to the County of Santa Clara Department of Correction, the inmate reportedly collapsed at about 8:40 a.m. as he was walking from the shower area of his housing module to his cell. Correctional and medical staff initiated lifesaving procedures and paramedics from the Milpitas Fire Department responded to the jail.

The inmate was taken by ambulance to San Jose Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:50 a.m., according to correctional officials.

The inmate had been in custody since Sept. 27 for felony violation of probation, petty theft and several warrants related to property theft, officials said.

He is the sixth inmate in Santa Clara County to die this year, according to correctional officials.

The Department of Correction is conducting an internal administrative investigation and the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office is also investigating the incident.

The inmate’s name is being withheld pending notification of his family.
