San Mateo police use crowdfunding to raise money for K-9 program

The San Mateo Police Department is using a fresh approach to raise the funding necessary to execute a successful canine program, and after about a week is a little more than $200 away from its end goal.

Officer Sean Keller, handler of the department’s lone canine, Ajax, is the focus of a crowdfunding effort through GoFundMe.com, which kicked off on New Year’s Day. With a goal to raise $3,500, the department’s crowdfunding effort is going very well. On Wednesday afternoon, Day 7 of the effort, the site stated that $3,260 had already been raised.

On the site, found at www.gofundme.com/5zsofg, a video of Ajax and Keller can be seen.

The Police Department hopes to expand its canine program, according to the site. The purpose of the drive is to balance the expenses the department says it will incur that it currently doesn’t have during these tough economic times for municipalities.
