Tosca Cafe, which has been operating at its current location since 1919, had to be sold recently amid a rent dispute. The former owner, who obtained it in the early 1980s, sold the bar to New York chef April Bloomfield, who, with a business partner, is working toward reopening it as a restaurant.
There is a kitchen in the 2,500-square-foot bar that, according to the Planning Department, is estimated to have last served food in the 1950s. The document, though, points out that the kitchen “remained operational but was not used for food preparation for the public.”
The conversion also could bring in a new generation of customers. Planning documents say that by becoming a full-service restaurant, Tosca Cafe is “broadening its customer base by allowing minors to dine at the establishment.”
