San Francisco police say shooting victim may have been mistaken for gang member

A 22-year-old man who was shot in the head in the Mission district early Tuesday may have been mistaken for a gang member, police said.

The victim is fighting for his life at San Francisco General Hospital after the attack on 19th Street near San Carlos Street around 12:30 a.m.

Witnesses reported hearing two gunshots and also seeing two suspects running west on 19th Street. The suspects reportedly had a conversation with the victim before the shooting, but it was not clear what was said, police spokesman Lt. Troy Dangerfield said.

The suspects were described as men in their mid-20s wearing dark clothing and hoodies, police said.

San Francisco’s gang task force is investigating, Dangerfield said.
