It’s last call for hamburgers.
A 24-hour Jack in the Box in the Richmond district has been forced to close at 2 a.m. after residents complained to city officials about late-night unruliness.
After-hours revelry at the fast-food eatery has been under scrutiny following a brutal late-night incident in which a local firefighter was run over with a car.
Eduardo Shaparo Esquivel, 22, of South San Francisco has been charged with ramming into 29-year-old Albert Bartal, critically injuring the Cal Fire firefighter at the Shell gas station on Geary Boulevard. According to police, Esquivel was exacting revenge on Bartal following a brawl inside the Jack in the Box at Geary and 11th Avenue.
Neighbors are fed up with the restaurant’s parking lot because it is a magnet for post-drinking belligerence, said David Lee, president of the Richmond Police Advisory Board.
“When the bars close at 2 a.m., that’s when people are looking for food, and they end up at that Jack in the Box,” Lee said. “There is a limited amount of seating there, but there is this large parking lot. That’s where the trouble starts.”
Residents have nothing against Jack in the Box as a business, Lee said, but the late-night hours need to be changed.
San Francisco police say the fast-food eatery has been operating around-the-clock without a permit.
Entertainment Commission Executive Director Jocelyn Kane said local businesses that want to stay open past 2 a.m. need an “extended hours” authorization.
Kane said the location has previously operated under a permit, but police say the Jack in the Box owner does not have such a permit now.
Mazhar Bhatti, a manager for the Richmond district Jack in the Box and other Bay Area locations, referred questions to the fast food company’s corporate office, which said Bhatti has taken pains to make the parking lot safer.
“They have security on site there Thursday through Saturday nights,” said Jack in the Box spokesman Brian Luscomb, who acknowledged guards wouldn’t have been present in the early-morning hours of the Thanksgiving Day incident. “He has also installed additional exterior lighting and trimmed some overgrown landscaping.”
Lee said community groups have worked with owners in the past to improve the parking lot, but problems persist.
“The feeling now is that’s the last straw,” Lee said. “We’ve given you a chance, and it’s not working.”
