Police shot and killed a man Wednesday night who had allegedly raised a hammer at them after stabbing his brother-in-law in Potrero Hill.

Officers responded to a vicious family dispute in the 900 block of De Haro Street at about 9:40 p.m. after the suspect dialed 911 to report that he had just done the stabbing.

“A second male voice was heard in the background pleading for help,” Officer Gordon Shyy said.

Officers arrived at the scene “within one minute,” Shyy said, and encountered the suspect when he emerged from a doorway armed with the hammer.

The suspect allegedly advanced on the officers with the hammer raised despite repeated commands to drop the weapon.

“Fearing for their safety, one officer discharged their weapon and struck the suspect,” Shyy said.

The suspect later died at San Francisco General Hospital.

The victim, who wasn’t identified, was also reportedly taken to SFGH where he is being treated for serious but not life threatening injuries. He is cooperating with investigators, Shyy said.

The officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave, per standard protocol.

Anyone with information is asked to contact San Francisco Police Investigators or may remain anonymous at 415-575-4444 or text-a-tip to TIP411 with SFPD at the start of the message.
