San Francisco Ballet announces 2012 season 

In its upcoming 79th season, San Francisco Ballet is slated to continue its emphasis on full-length works, pieces by master choreographer George Balanchine and world premieres.

Announced Monday, the company’s 2012 season includes the troupe’s  premiere of John Cranko’s “Onegin,” a newly designed production of San Francisco Ballet Artistic Director Helgi Tomasson and Yuri Possokhov’s “Don Quixote” and the return of Tomasson’s “Romeo & Juliet.”

An all-Balanchine program will mark the 60th anniversary of the ballet peforming works by Balanchine, while new dances by Mark Morris, Edwaard Liang, Ashley Page and Possokhov are scheduled. Works by  Wayne McGregor, Rudolf Nureyev, Alexei Ratmansky, Jerome Robbins and Christopher Wheeldon round out the programming.  

The season unofficially opens in 2011 with 30 peformances of the beloved “Nutcracker,” running Dec. 9-27.

The opening night gala is Jan. 19, 2102, and Programs 1 through 8 run in alternating repertory from Jan. 27 to May 5.

Program 2: McGregor’s “Chroma,” Morris premiere, Wheeldon’s “Number Nine” (opens Feb. 14)
Program 3: Ratmansky’s “Le Carnaval des Animaux” (“Carnival of the Animals”), Possokhov world premiere, Tomasson’s “Trio” (opens Feb. 16)    
Program 4: Tomasson’s “Romeo & Juliet” (opens March 6)  
Program  5: Tomasson’s “The Fifth Season,” Liang premiere, Robbins’ “Glass Pieces” (opens March 21)
Program 6: Nureyev’s “Raymonda—Act III,” Possokhov’s “RAkU,” Page world premiere (opens March 23)
Program 7: Balanchine’s “Divertimento No. 15,” “Scotch Symphony,” “The Four Temperaments” (April 12)
Program 8: Tomasson/Possokhov’s “Don Quixote” (April 27)
