San Carlos hosts new home show

It is perhaps a little-known fact that San Carlos is a bustling hub for home improvement aficionados in the Peninsula.

With more than 300 construction and building materials businesses in town, home improvement is the largest commercial sector in San Carlos, contributing to nearly 30 percent of the city's sales tax revenue.

On Saturday, the San Carlos Chamber of Commerce will unite its do-it-yourself resources in San Carlos' first Good Living Home Improvement Marketplace, which showcases mostly local, independent businesses.

Featuring product displays and demonstrations from builders, plumbers and landscape services, the free event has been created to appeal to architects, contractors, designers and homeowners who want to find out more about local sources for their projects.

"San Carlos is a central location for the strong residential construction industry our Peninsula enjoys," said Don Mancini, president of Pioneer Millwork. "There are a large number of construction-related material suppliers in San Carlos, which makes one-stop shopping a convenience for our customers."

Vendors include the Peninsula branch of Woodcraft, a woodworking supplier founded in Boston in 1928, Da Vinci Marble, sustainability-focused contractors PlaceMakers Inc., Pioneer Millwork, Artistic Tile & Stone, Tooland Inc., Decorative Plumbing Supply Inc., PG&E, Peninsula Power Partners, the Countertop Store of San Carlos, floor-cover experts Conklin Brothers and others.

Yet the event focuses on more than nuts and bolts. Antique dealers and decoration specialists from Place Bellecour — a former French import company that offers antique and vintage furniture, fine art, collectibles and decorating services — also are participating.

Food and beverages, microbrew and wine vendors, and food demonstrations by chef Steve Cortez also are on the family-friendly program, which includes live music. Cover band High n' Tight plays at 10 a.m., and Jenny Kerr and her Americana band, performing roots music on banjo, harmonica and slide guitar, take the stage at 1:30 p.m.
