It may have been a relatively down year for city volleyball as a whole, but it wasn’t a down year for Sacred Heart Cathedral, and that is reflected in The San Francisco Examiner and SanFranPreps.com All-City girls’ volleyball team.

Headlining the list is the Player of the Year, Sacred Heart standout outside hitter Courtney Wong. The 5-foot-9 senior led the Irish in kills, but was also one of their best back-row defenders, along with first-team selection Amanda Lee, inarguably the best libero in San Francisco.

Rounding out the Irish selections are sophomore middle blockers Madison Murtagh (first team) and Kaitlyn Jochum (second team), senior setter Indira Arce and junior outside hitter Sarah Plett (third team), which all played significant roles in leading Sacred Heart to its ninth straight Central Coast Section championship game.

The rest of the selections are from all walks of San Francisco high schools.

Academic Athletic Association champion Lowell is well-represented, with kill leader Amorelle Applin a first-team middle blocker and senior Emily Lim also a first-team selection. AAA Player of the Year Cynthia Ngan of Balboa is a second-team selection, while her setter, junior Maribel Matos, is the first-team setter. Matos may not be the best pure setter in The City, but is a dynamic serving threat and regularly had multiple aces in matches this season.

Small-school programs also make several appearances, with standout International  freshman outside hitter Michelle Gajdka (first team), Drew senior Iris Qasevakatini (second team), Lick-Wilmerding senior setter Stacey Cheong (third team) and University sophomore middle blocker Jaelah Hutchison (third team).

Gajdka is the only freshman on the All-City team that isn’t an honorable mention and could be the favorite for next season’s Player of the Year award, not only for her talent, but for the dominating role she plays for the Jaguars. International set Gajdka at all locations on the court this season and she also is its best back-row defender.
