Rep. Gene Taylor, D-Miss., becomes first Democrat to support repeal of Obamacare

With this news I think we can say that the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, a.k.a. Obamacare, is officially politically toxic. Heritage Action for America just sent out the following press release:

Today, Mississippi Democrat Gene Taylor became the first Democrat to sign Discharge Petition #11, which would force a vote on repealing the unpopular law.  Representative Taylor’s decision marks a new phase in the campaign to repeal Obamacare, which Heritage Action for America launched in June.

“We are pleased to see Representative Gene Taylor choosing principle over party,” Heritage Action CEO Michael A. Needham said.  “His commitment to representing his constituents, who have been opposed to Obamacare from the beginning, is refreshing.”

In August, Heritage Action for America ran a series of paid issue advertisements in targeted states, including Mississippi.  The ad questioned why Members who voted against Obamacare would oppose repealing the law.

“I fully expect every Member who opposed Obamacare will sign the discharge petition,” Needham continued.  “Heritage Action is ready to commit additional resources to ensure they act in the best interest of their constituents, instead of their political party.”

A Discharge Petition is a legislative tool in the U.S. House of Representatives that allows an oppressed political majority to bring legislation to a vote.  In this case, Discharge Petition #11 would bring H.R.4972, a bill to repeal the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, to a vote.  This is the only way to force a vote on repeal during this Congress and force Members to take a stand on Obamacare.
