Bad-beat poker payouts and big progressive slot payouts have been lighting up at Red Hawk Casino.
A Placerville woman hit a $1.4 million jackpot Aug. 24 playing a penny Millionaire Sevens slot machine. She had been playing for about 30 minutes and had only spent about $20 when lights started flashing.
That was the third progressive jackpot to hit recently at Red Hawk. A Sacramento woman won a $179,950 progressive jackpot playing a Fortune King penny slot Aug. 8 and an Elk Grove woman won a $226,853 progressive jackpot playing a Wheel of Fortune quarter machine July 6.
Red Hawk belongs to a 17-state, 300-tribe Native American progressive gaming network. Any time a coin is played in a linked machine, anywhere in the network, the cumulative jackpot continues to grow until it is won.
“As you have more players, the chance of a jackpot is more likely,” said Mark Ward, sales and promotions manager at Red Hawk. “We’ve had more business as people have found a home here.” Red Hawk will celebrate its second anniversary in December.
Bryan DeLugo, vice president of slots, noted: “Several games have hit twice on the same machine for the top jackpot.”
Liz Hortsman, director of table games, said Red Hawk has paid two poker bad beats — $13,949 and $56,606 within a few weeks in September. A bad beat is paid to a player who has a very strong hand, but is beaten by another player with an even stronger hand.
The casino executives attributed the wins to bigger crowds and returning players.
“It just happened. The cards got dealt,” Hortsman said.
Red Hawk’s 70-seat, nonsmoking poker room features Texas hold ’em tournaments every weekday with a $40 buy-in.
Most promotions require a membership in Red Hawk’s players club, which is free. There are free slot tournaments every from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Seniors 55 or older can play in slot tourneys from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Ward said the casino’s $500,000 pirate promotion has been extended through Nov. 30, and its $1 million football season promotion will even have second-chance drawings in January.
