Reckless driver rams cab onto sidewalk

An unlicensed driver caused a startling accident Friday morning that launched a taxicab onto a city sidewalk, where it ping-ponged off a parking meter and lamp post before striking a building, police said.

The 23-year-old man’s 1998 Buick rear-ended the cab in the 900 block of Kearny Street around 3:42 a.m., police Sgt. Troy Dangerfield said. The driver allegedly tried to flee the crash scene, but was caught two blocks away by cops who witnessed the collision, he said.

The impact had the cab hitting the eastside wall of a building where Cafe Zoetrope is located, Dangerfield said. The cafe was not damaged, he said.

“It hit a wall, but didn’t cause the wall to cave or anything,” Dangerfield said.

One person suffered a minor leg injury in the collision. The person was a passenger in the suspect’s car, cops said. The taxi driver was not injured.

The driver, identified as Michael Molieri of South San Francisco, is faces charges of felony hit-and-run, driving without a license and speeding, Dangerfield said.
