Rangers sign 1B-OF Brad Hawpe to minor league deal

The Texas Rangers signed veteran first baseman and outfielder Brad Hawpe to a minor league contract.

The Rangers announced Friday that they are also inviting the Fort Worth, Texas, native to their major league camp this spring.

The 32-year-old alumnus of LSU and Boswell High School in the Fort Worth suburb of Saginaw batted .231 with four homers and 19 RBIs in 62 games with the San Diego Padres last season. He started 42 games at first and seven in right field before "Tommy John" ligament transplant surgery sidelined him for the rest of the season on June 21.

Hawpe has a career major league average of .276 with 124 homers and 490 RBIs in 893 games with the Colorado Rockies, Tampa Bay Rays and Padres, playing mostly right field.
