Pop-up store focuses on ocean 

On Saturday, Brian Lam, the editorial director of the technology blog Gizmodo, is launching a pop-up store and gallery dedicated to oceanic life called Scuttlefish. The store, located at 136 Fillmore St., will be open through Nov. 27, with profits going to Save The Waves Coalition.

How do you unplug from technology and connect with the ocean? The great thing about technology is that I can work from home and can work from some great places beyond a cubicle. But the only place I can really get away is the ocean. I’ve been able to stave off burning out and extend my career by being in the ocean a few times a week, and I’m grateful for the relief it gives me.

Where do you usually go? I’m about two minutes away from Ocean Beach and I usually go there. Ocean beach used to have a pier and amusement park and be really vibrant. It’s one of the few places in The City where development has reversed. So many people don’t enjoy it as much as they could.

What inspired the pop-up store? Scuttlefish is about getting people to appreciate the ocean more, but on their own terms. I don’t want to tell people not to use plastic bags. I want them to come to that on their own accord because they think about why they love the ocean. I’m just trying to popularize it a little bit more — like “Jaws” did, but in a less fearful way.
