Police: ‘We do not have a serial rapist’

In October there were five reported rapes and that number increased to nine in November. This uptick, however, is not the sign of a serial rapist, the San Francisco Police Department said Monday amid questions about why there was an increase in such crimes.

“I can assure you we do not have a serial rapist,” Captain Mike Biel told the Board of Supervisors Public Safety Committee.

“None of them had been stranger-rapes,” Biel said. “All of them had some sort of relationship with the victims, be it an ex-boyfriend, a spouse or an acquaintance.”

Reports of rapes are down compared with the same time last year. There were 149 reported rapes at this time last year, and 132 this year.
