Police seize 4,000 pounds of fireworks

Approximately 1,000 pounds of fireworks — including M-80s and Roman candles — were seized by San Francisco police on Fourth of July weekend.

The department already had seized 3,000 pounds of fireworks in 2008 prior to the weekend, according to a statement made by police Chief Heather Fong on June 30. Misdemeanor possession of fireworks can bring a fine of up to $1,000 or one year in county jail, while possession of stronger explosives, such as M-80s, is a felony that could result in prison time.
