Police now say a house fire near the Castro district early Monday morning was an accident, and not arson.
The fire was reported just after 3 a.m. at 1370 Clayton St., located just up the hill from the Castro district, according to a fire dispatcher. The flames were under control about 45 minutes later.
At least six residents were evacuated from the house. The Red Cross is assisting those displaced by the fire. No injuries were reported.
Earlier Monday, police said the fire was suspicious. After further investigation, the fire was deemed to be accidental, police spokesman Lt. Troy Dangerfield said.
Castro district residents remain on edge after four fires were intentionally set in just over 24 hours last week. Arson investigators are hunting a possible serial arsonist.
