Police on Thursday released the names of two men booked on vehicular manslaughter charges in separate fatal collisions with pedestrians on New Year's Eve.
Syed Muzzafar, 57, of Union City was charged with vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and failure to yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk. He's accused of fatally striking 6-year-old Sophia Liu about 8 p.m. at Polk and Ellis streets and critically injuring her mother. Liu's 4-year-old brother suffered less severe injuries.
Earlier Tuesday, about 3:30 p.m., 86-year-old Zhen Guang Ng was fatally struck by a vehicle at Rolph and Naples streets, according to police. The man charged in that accident is 69-year-old Giampaolo Boschetti of San Francisco.
Boschetti faces charges of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and failure to stop at a stop sign.
Both drivers remained at the accident scenes and cooperated with police during the course of their investigation. The two deaths brought the pedestrian fatality count in The City to 20 for the year, the highest since 2007.
