Police officers identified in fatal shooting

The two San Francisco police officers who shot and killed an unarmed man in the dark attic of a Lake Merced apartment Tuesday have been identified as Officer John Keesor and Officer Michelle Alvis, a department spokesperson confirmed Thursday.

The dead man, an apparent squatter identified by the San Francisco Medical Examiner’s Office as 25-year-old Asa Sullivan, of San Francisco, was pronounced dead in the attic of a two-story unit in the Park Villa apartment complex, police Chief Heather Fong said Wednesday.

Police initially reported that the suspect had run into the attic and fired shots at officers through the ceiling of the apartment’s second story. On Wednesday, Fong said that was not the case.

She said that when several officers responded to a call reporting trespassers in a Park Villa Apartments unit, they entered the unit and found two men. They detained one of the men but the other ran up to the attic, she said.

Fong said Keesor and Alvis, both officers from the department’s Taraval Station, followed the suspect into the dark attic. She said the officers ordered the suspect to come out, but he refused. Police said Sullivan had an outstanding felony warrant but was unable to verify for what or where the warrant was issued.

While dealing with the suspect, Fong said, one of the officers saw him assume what she described as a shooting position, "extending his arms out, with a cylindrical object in his hand and pointing it at the female officer." At that point, Fong said, Keesor fired at the suspect.

Simultaneously, Fong said, Alvis felt something graze her face, and she also fired. She was injured, Fong said, but now believes the object was a ricochet.

The suspect was hit and killed, but Fong declined to say how many shots were fired.

Keesor has four years experience with the force, and Alvis has three years experience, according to Fong. They are both currently on administrative leave, as part of the department’s protocol.
