A three-year-old San Leandro girl took a fatal fall this weekend at the Embassy Suites Hotel, in what police are tentatively ruling a tragic accident.
The girl, identified by the San Francisco Medical Examiner as Leialoha Fotu, was found on the hotel lobby floor after falling off a second- or third-floor balcony Saturday afternoon, police said.
Emergency personnel brought Fotu, who was breathing but unresponsive with critical head injuries to the trauma center at San Francisco General Hospital, where she died a few hours later.
Police Cmdr. Brad Floyd was not releasing any further information Monday, saying only that the department was still conducting an investigation that could take several days.
Based on interviews from witnesses and the girl’s parents and 13-year-old sister, police learned that there was a large graduation party and several other events happening at the hotel that day. The girl apparently ran away from a family member who was taking care of her. The caretaker reportedly started looking around the lobby and ground floor of the hotel in search of the child, who was spotted falling soon thereafter from a higher floor.
A hotel employee who did not want to be identified told The Examiner only that the girl and her parents were not hotel guests and that they appeared to have been attending an event at the hotel.
Police ask that anyone with further information call (650) 777-4100.
