Police ask for help to catch carjacker who is on the loose

Police are asking for help in catching a carjacker who stole a car in the Hillsdale Shopping Center in San Mateo and lead police on a high-speed chase.

The suspect – described as a Hispanic male in his 20s, roughly 5 feet 8 inches tall – approached a vehicle in the parking lot above Sears around 8:30 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 14.

The suspect showed a black semi-automatic handgun and demanded the victim’s car, according to the San Mateo Police Department. After handing over the car, the victim immediately called police and they responded to the area.

Police reportedly spotted the vehicle, but the suspect failed to stop for officers and fled on U.S. Highway 101 at speeds topping 100 mph.

San Mateo police said they terminated the pursuit due to safety concerns, but said they are “working diligently to resolve the case.”

The vehicle was later recovered, abandoned.

Though, the occurrence appears to be an isolated event – there have been no other recent crimes of this type in the area – according to police, the San Mateo Police Department said they continue to do regular and high-profile safety checks of Hillsdale Mall and all shopping areas during this holiday shopping season.

The suspect was last seen wearing a hooded black sweatshirt and has short hair.

San Mateo police is asking for the public’s help in solving this case.
