Police arrest suspect in Mission murder

A 42-year-old man was arrested Tuesday morning for allegedly beating a transient and leaving him to die in the stairwell of a Mission District hotel early Monday morning.

Police detained Roger Pacheco-Paz, a San Francisco resident, near the Prita Hotel at 2268 Mission St. after questioning in Pacheco-Paz and other people in the area surrounding the death of Luis Montoya, said Officer Boaz Mariles.

Officers found Montaya beaten to death with a blunt object they found at the scene, what was originally reported by police as a stabbing, around 6 a.m. Monday after a woman who found him called police.

Mariles said the two had an altercation shortly before police arrived that morning, but did not know what it was regarding.

Montoya’s death was the 22nd murder this year.

Pacheco-Paz was booked for one count of homicide.
